The name Haemanthus is derived from the Greek "haima" meaning blood and "anthos" meaning flower - a reference to the red flowers of most species. Albiflos refers to the white flowers of this particular species

This evergreen member of the Amaryllidaceae family  is found on the eastern coast of South Africa, growing in well-drained soil with some water and little sun. It has broad leaves up to 25 centimetres long, and a bulb which can grow to 8 centimetres in diameter. The "paint brush" flower is white with golden tipped anthers. The plant is reproduced by seeds, from the red fruits, and it also readily increases by offsets.
