The Nursery

Dear fellow plant enthusiast,

We hope that you will enjoy browsing this web site, whatever your prior level of acquaintance with proteas and their relatives.

Proteas are increasingly popular in the UK for their cut or dried flowers, but hitherto were considered too delicate and exotic for UK growers.  Yet, if one visits South Africa and Australia, proteas, leucadendrons and leucospermums are commonly seen thriving in gardens and in the wild, despite the harsh temperatures and poor soils.  On our own trips to these places, we also noted that many gardeners in the UK have access to heated conservatories and greenhouses that can support more benign growing conditions for these plants than they would endure in nature. Our nursery: Saflora Plants represents the evolving outcome of those thoughts and we are constantly trialling new species and varieties of proteaceae for UK conditions.

We supply plants by mail order and over the Internet and specialise in plants native to the southern hemisphere, which are not readily available to UK customers.    Highlights of our range include: the magnificent King Protea (P. cynaroides) which is the national flower of South Africa, and the wonderful Clivia "Great Wide Yellow"; Closely related to proteas, we offer several species of leucadendron and leucospermum (also from South Africa) and banksia (from Australia).  Selected species are also available as seeds.

All of our plants are grown in our greenhouses from cultivated stock, and not collected from the wild.  Except where stated, we supply our plants as carefully packed young specimens in 10 cm pots.  We also operate a no-quibble guarantee.

New Introductions

We have been growing and offering the wonderful yellow version of clivia miniata known as citrina and last year we decided to expand our involvement with Clivias by popular customer demand. Accordingly we researched new plant introductions, which have not been available in the UK before. The first of these releases is the "Great Wide Yellow".

The “Great Wide Yellow” is a beautiful new variety of Clivia miniata that represents a major breeding advance by clivia breeder Lisa Mannion from New Zealand over the yellow clivias hitherto available; as she has retained all the desirable ancestral clivia characteristics while adding extra wide luxuriant leaves and larger, deeper yellow flowers. After almost ten years under development in New Zealand, seed and plants of the “Great Wide Yellow” clivia have been released for sale throughout the UK and all other countries of the EU through the specialist UK nursery SAflora Plants.

Our Nursery is based in Lampeter in West Wales. SAflora Plants is a mail order nursery that grow plants native to the Southern Hemisphere that are not readily available to UK customers.

We supply young plants in 10 cm pots (except where stated) which are carefully packed and sent by post.

"Thank you for your advisory e-mail. Just to let you know that....... they arrived in perfect condition and she was very impressed by the packaging, so many thanks indeed for your excellent service and for taking the trouble to check that the package had arrived - very much appreciated".
