The genus Clivia is named after Lady Clive, sometime Duchess of Northumberland. They make long-lived evergreen “bulbous” plants (bulbous as in red hot poker; not as in daffodil) that are valued as much for the architectural qualities of the luxuriant foliage as the flowers.
Clivias make robust plants: grow them in pots using John Innes No 2 or similar with extra perlite for drainage. They like good light but not hot sunshine. Feed occasionally during the growing season (spring to autumn) and water regularly: they can withstand drought but do appreciate regular watering. Despite their lush
appearance, clivias are not
Clivia miniata is the species most usually encountered and bears red or orange flowers; “Citrina” is a naturally occurring yellow-flowered variety of C. miniata, and recognised as one of the most beautiful clivias and is extensively used for breeding programs. We grow and supply Clivia Miniata "citrina" plants. We also supply plants and seeds of the recently introduced Clivia "Great Wide Yellow". |
New for 2006: We are offering clivia seeds from China, where the growers have developed the “Daruma” and “Monk” strains of clivia as distinctively shaped plants with broad leaves that are often subtly (and not so subtly!) variegated (see photos). Our seeds come from well-known grower WANG FANG (see his website at: clivia.topcn.cn and note that the www prefix is NOT required) and should include some that will develop variegated leaves although the percentage cannot be guaranteed.
Click here to go to clivia order page After almost ten years under development in New Zealand, seed and plants of the “Great Wide Yellow” clivia have been released for sale throughout the UK and all other countries of the EU through the specialist UK nursery SAflora Plants. The “Great Wide Yellow” is a beautiful new variety of Clivia miniata that represents a major breeding advance by clivia breeder Lisa Mannion from New Zealand. Lisa Mannion has retained all of the desirable ancestral clivia characteristics while adding extra wide luxuriant leaves and larger, deeper yellow flowers. .With the ‘Great Wide Yellow’, you get generous heads of buttery-yellow flowers that sit well above the foliage in spring. Even when out of flower, the extra-wide deep green leaves make it a stunning plant. We are confident that ‘Great Wide Yellow’ will prove extremely popular with clivia collectors and plant fanciers everywhere.”
